I think it is a fact that at a certain point, each one of us has tasted alcoholic drinks. I am also pretty sure that everyone is well aware of the effects of alcohol to the person once it is taken in the body. Usually, after drinking a handful, the person may become dizzy, feels like vomiting, more like what they call “tipsy”. Alcoholic drinks contain substances that go to a part in the brain and alter its function, thus, causing imbalance, aggressive and risky behaviors, and irrational thinking.
On the other hand, after becoming wasted, a person is able to recover probably after ample sleep or drinking a hot cup of coffee, or simply allowing the alcohol to subside in the body. Thus, the person is able to function properly again.
When we refer to alcoholics. It is quite a different case. Alcoholics are those people who could not discontinue drinking regardless of the harmful consequences. Alcoholism is a drinking problem wherein drinking alcoholic drinks becomes a habit to the person. This is a problem because the drinking habit may result to undesirable and negative effects. The chief effect of alcoholism is to encourage the sufferer to drink at times and in amounts that are harmful to physical health. The secondary damage caused by an inability to control one’s drinking manifests in many ways. Alcoholism also has important social costs to both the alcoholic and their family and friends. Alcoholism can have adverse effects on mental health causing psychiatric disorders to develop.
Alcoholism is one cause of abused women and children. Usually, among men, alcohol induces them to be very violent. Most often, it is the wives and the children that are inflicted by the violent behaviors. Though we may say that these people are not sober when they beat their wives and children, one cannot take away the trauma and the painful memories they have given to their loved ones.
The problems of alcoholism can be traced to the genes. If one traces his family tree, and one of his family members or ancestors are alcoholic, then the person may be at risk for alcoholism. Studies have been made in trying to identify which gene is responsible for alcoholism. Moreover, social factors such as the kind of friends you are constantly with, the parental model, and the amount of stress could be factors that contribute to alcoholism.
One of the primary units of any society is the family. It is where the person first learns to talk, to think, to feel, and to respond. When a father has a drinking problem, he could be a contributing factor to his son’s drinking problem in the days to come. The child sees the father as a model. He is the primary role model for behaviors at home. Thus, the child may learn that it is fine to be drinking all the time. This is alarming because as the child grows, no one could be there to guide him as to what is really right and wrong. The mother may not be aware of the transference that is happening to her child.
Moreover, alcoholism is a disease that nobody seems to accept. An alcoholic may have a hard time admitting that he or she has a drinking problem. Some would say there are functional alcoholics. There is still no difference. They are just in denial. Yes, they function well when they are sober, but as soon as they get their hands on a bottle of beer, they become the the alcoholic and violent son. Though the happening of alcoholism is prevalent among men, women are not exempt. They are also at risk for alcoholism. Everyone is at risk for developing alcohol problems.
Alcoholism is a problem that produces violent effects on anyone with women and children who are the typical victims.
